"The value has been in doing this rather than just thinking about the team at work. It was my first time sailing - completely relevant and great fun." - Delegate
Problem
‘Our Department Heads see themselves as a committee of individuals, not a team. It’s affecting our output and we need to change’
Unable to work as a team, a group of managers in a city bank lacked cohesion and commitment. By not combining their skills and knowledge, the team was not reaching its goals, which in turn affected overall business performance. Open and honest communication was also lacking, with individual relationships suffering as conflicts remained unresolved.
Solution
We designed a bespoke 1-day sailing programme so that delegates could experience the positive benefits that come from working in a real team. This included a presentation and workshop on high performance team behaviours onshore prior to the voyage.
Team members with poor working relationships were selected to work on the same boat. Our sailing challenges require team members to work closely together with co-operation and clear communication – without these, your yacht will never reach its destination. Our business psychologists conducted facilitated discussions throughout the day as delegates experimented with new roles and behaviours. Regular feedback and coaching gave them ideas on how to improve performance.
Results
Working relationships improved significantly. Tools and insights learnt about communication, conflict, decision making and teamwork were taken back and used in the workplace. A more positive and buoyant atmosphere lead to a sense that members now worked in a real team with real team goals and aspirations. Collaboration also improved, making the work place not only more efficient and effective, but a more enjoyable place to be.
